Advice and Support

Funding for an SpLD assessment

Can a student be referred for a Specific Learning Differences (SpLD) support with a Specialist teacher through the University?

Yes. We offer diagnostic assessments for enrolled students and Study Skills support where a student is not eligible for DSA. We may also offer interim Study Skills support for students who are awaiting their DSA funding.

Disability Adviser available

Are there specialist staff available to talk to within the service?  Is there a disability officer or a disability adviser for students to talk to?

Yes, the DDS Team includes Disability Advisors who are available for students to speak with. Once registered with the DDS Team, students will be allocated a lead Disability Advisor as their main point of contact.

Support from academic staff

Is advice and support available from academic staff within the faculties of the University? How do students access this advice and support?

Yes.Students have access to an Academic Mentor and in Level 3/4 are allocated a Personal Academic Tutor. 

Staff continuity and understanding individual needs

Are the specialist disability staff in the team able to offer a personalised, bespoke response to a student’s needs? Where possible, is continuity provided for the student in meeting the same Disability Adviser and/or mentor so the student can get to know them over time?

Yes, students are assigned to an individual advisor to help with continuity. The support offered is personalised and bespoke for the individual needs. 

One to one mentoring support

Are there any additional services available such as mentoring, counselling services or a buddy scheme to help a new student to settle in if needed?

The university offers mentoring support for eligible students (those without DSA who meet the criteria).

The university has also setup a buddy scheme for new students. We encourage students who may benefit from this to reach out to DDS.

DDS have also setup a Disabled Students Forum which is open for DDS registered students to join.

Yes. The Student Union has a range of specialist societies which may of interest to students.

London Metropolitan University does not own or manage any halls of residence.

Supported provision additional to that identified above

How can applicants/current students meet with the DDS team?

DDS book appointments for applicants/current students to meet with a DDS Advisor to discuss their support needs. Students can choose to either:

  • Meet face to face, either at our Holloway Road or Aldgate Campus
  • Meet online, via Microsoft Teams
  • Speak over the phone.

DDS also offer drop ins for students during the week via the Student Zone.
